Both of my grandparents came over from the Netherlands shortly after WWII to immigrate to Canada. They each separately came over with little more than a suitcase and a few dollars. However, they each had some basic skills. My grandfather was a carpenter and my grandmother was a nurse. My grandparents got married, they enjoyed a full life, raised a family of four girls and helped to literally build the church they attended through their entire lives, from the ground up.
