September 17, 1997, the first and only birthday I’ve ever celebrated outside the US. My new classmates at Bundeshandelsakademie und Bundeshandelsschule bought me a cowbell, which, of course, ended up around my neck just as our new teacher came around the corner to meet me for the first time. Whoops.

September 21, 2002, I’m holding on tight to a man I’ve just met, as he revs the Harley. His sleek green motorcycle helmet is dwarfed by my own over-sized headgear, which leaves me wondering whether I’ll fly off the back, or if the wind shear will get me once we’re up...
