What is an investment credit card?
An investment credit card enables you to make and charge purchases or payments while earning rewards such as points or cash back that you can deposit directly into your investment account to buy securities, like stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Investment credit cards are also referred to as brokerage credit cards.
One major benefit of an investment credit card is that it is a passive investment tool, meaning it’s another way to save money and/or increase your investments without having to change your savings habits, since you are investing money you didn’t originally have. It, however, can change your spending habits in a positive way, encouraging you to align your charges with rewards according to your card’s terms and limitations, helping you make the most of your spending.
How does an investment credit card work?
An investment credit card basically functions like most credit cards that offer rewards for your spending activity. You can use it to make purchases or payments and earn rewards according to the terms and conditions of your card. Some firms offer cash back while others award points for every dollar you charge. Those reward points can be redeemed for gift cards, travel, merchandise or even cash, which can be deposited into your brokerage account to fund investments.
Typically, financial services companies offer bonus dollars or points when you open an account and may even offer an introductory offer, like Edward Jones, for balance transfers or other special deals.

You will want to read the fine print to understand the specifics of how your credit card works, and what and how you can use earned rewards.
Can I use an investment credit card if I have a brokerage account?
You can use an investment credit card to invest your rewards in a brokerage account in many cases, especially if it is offered by or in partnership with a brokerage firm with which you have an account, and your account is in good standing. It’s another way to add to your investment portfolio. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your card to understand how you can use your card and any earned rewards. Reach out to your Edward Jones financial advisor with any questions.
